A crucial part of bringing in a new Professional Staff member is providing a thorough orientation to the hospitals and the specific department(s), division(s) and program(s) in which he or she will work.
Resident Orientation
New residents attend a corporate ½ day orientation on June 30 each year. In this orientation residents are introduced to a number of people they will come in contact with during their training. The facilitators takes them through a humorous case study of a "night in the life" featuring a resident's first night on call that introduces residents to numerous corporate policies, practices, procedures and facilities including:
Hospital security
Personal protective equipment
Bed management
Coroners Reports
Health Records
Electronic Patient Record
Call rooms
Waste disposal
Human Resource policies
Privacy and Confidentiality
Patient consent
Where to go for help
Western Housestaff Committee
Resident Relations Committee
New residents also receive a Schulich Resident Handbook produced by the Post Graduate Education Office at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry with input from the hospitals. This handbook is included in the Resident On-line Orientation.
Resident Orientation On line provides information about moving to Canada, living in London, details residents need to know right away and priority learning programs.
Professional Staff Orientation
One initiative for Medical Affairs in 2006 is to improve corporate-level Orientation for Professional Staff.
A Professional Staff Orientation similar to the one for residents will be available on-line soon.
