College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario are governing bodies for Ontario's 23 selfregulated health professions. The colleges set standards for skills, knowledge and behaviour of their members. Physicians are required to register with the colleges in order to obtain a certificate to practice medicine in Ontario. The colleges also provide assistance to members of the community who wish to locate health-care professionals in their region and is available to those who wish to register complaints about treatment or behaviour of one of their members. The Health Professions Regulatory Advisory Council responsible for monitoring patient relations programs for each college and advising the Minister about its effectiveness and advises the Minister of Health about:
whether unregulated professions should be regulated,
whether regulated professions should no longer be regulated,
suggested amendments to the Act, a health profession Act, or a regulation under the Act,
matters concerning the quality assurance programs undertaken by colleges; and
any matter relating to the regulation of health professions referred to it by the Minister.
