Vacation Entitlement: In accordance with the PAIRO guidelines, you are entitled to four weeks (twenty working days) paid vacation each year. The academic year runs from July 1 to June 30 the following year. Vacations may be taken at any time provided professional and patient responsibilities are met to the satisfaction of the Hospital Department head.
Leaves-vacation/conference:. Forms are available from www.med.uwo.ca/Postgrad-Medicine/Forms. Obtain written approval from the service involved and then return form to your program office.
How to arrange for vacation: Vacation forms should be submitted for approval to the Chief Resident of the service involved no later than the first week of the month before you wish to take your vacation. A response should be made within two weeks of submission. If you don't know the name of the Chief Resident, call switchboard. All requests should be submitted by March 1.
Professional Leave: In addition to vacation entitlement, residents are granted additional paid leave for educational purposes, up to a maximum of seven (7) working days per year. At your request this can be consecutive and will not be deducted from regular vacation entitlement. This may be taken at any time, provided that professional and patient responsibilities are met to the satisfaction of the Hospital Department head.
Each Resident will be entitled to paid leave for the purpose of taking any Canadian or American professional certification examination; for example, Royal College examinations, LMCC, ECFMG, CFPC. This leave will include the exam date/s and reasonable travelling time to and from the exam site. This leave is in addition to other vacations or leaves.

If you're scheduled to work on a statutory holiday, you will be entitled to a paid day off in lieu of the holiday, to be taken at a mutually-convenient time within 90 days of the holiday worked. If the facility where you are working recognizes an additional statutory holiday you'll be entitled to this as well.
Christmas Holidays: All residents receive five (5)consecutive days at either Christmas or New Years, which includes two statutory holidays as outlined above. Dates are flexible to meet the service needs of the department. Let the Chief Resident of the department know if you have a preference for Christmas or New Years.
Religious Holidays are recognized by the Office of the Registrar, UWO. More information is available through the PGE web site.
Compassionate Leave & Leave of Absence: Discuss your requirements for a compassionate leave or a leave of absence with your program director. Forms are available from www.med.uwo.ca/Postgrad-Medicine/Forms. The Post Graduate Education office and the Paymaster must be notified.
Sick Leave: A resident's salary and benefits will continue if work cannot be performed due to illness or injury. For more information, refer to details on sick leave as outlined by the PAIRO-CAHO agreement.
Pregnancy and Parental Leave: A resident will receive up to seventeen (17) consecutive weeks of pregnancy leave and 18 consecutive weeks of parental leave. The resident will not be required to return to her duties sooner than six (6) weeks following delivery. You are required to give four (4) week's notice of your intention regarding the timing in order to ensure that professional and patient-care responsibilities are met. You will be required to work for the same period as the leave in order to complete your year of post-graduate training. For more information see the PAIRO agreement.
