Hospital Construction Transforms View in South and North London

The G.A. Huot Surgical Centre and Diagnostic Imaging Centre seen from the roof of St. Joseph’s Hospital. The skyline in north and south London is changing on a daily basis since major groundbreaking events at London Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph's Health Care, London. At the intersection of Commissioners and Wellington roads, another floor of concrete is added every twenty days to the planned ten-storey, 620,000 square foot Children's Hospital of Western Ontario and Grace Donnelly Women's Health Pavilion. The structure will be topped off in June 2004, with the interior work scheduled for completion in 2008. At that time, the last hospital programs will move out of South Street Campus of London Health Science Centre. Grateful patients and caregivers will finally bid the original Victoria Hospital farewell. Moving out of the aging and landlocked South Street location has been a goal since the 1970s. Two floors of the new facility will house women's health services and be known as the Grace Donnelly Women's Health Pavilion. The Children's Hospital of Western Ontario will relocate from its current location and occupy two more floors. Mental health services, laboratories, diagnostic imaging, and other programs will occupy the remainder of the facility. A portion of the space will be held in reserve for future growth. At the oppostie end of the city, the new two-storey G.A. Huot Surgical Centre and Diagnostic Imaging Centre is quickly taking shape. Construction is scheduled for substantial completion in September 2005 and occupancy by January 2006. The surgical centre will feature 10 new state-of-the-art operating rooms designed to primarily support the hospital's Urology, Eye Care and Hand and Upper Limb programs. It will also include expanded recovery areas, a children's play area and conveniently located waiting facilities for patients and their families. This project is part of a $369.5 million citywide hospital restructuring project, which over the next five years will see the creation of new roles at St. Joseph's Hospital in day surgery, outpatient treatment programs and an array of clinics and services in an ambulatory care environment. |
